The Irish Army has expressed shock at a government plan to reduce the manpower ceiling from the current 11,500 to 10,500. (The actual number of people in uniform is currently 10,900.) The Army says it cannot fulfill its commitments if the manpower is cut by this amount. --Stephen V Cole
